Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority Announces Installation of New Fareboxes

Charleroi, PA – The Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority (MMVTA) is excited to announce the installation of brand-new fareboxes across its fixed-route fleet beginning mid-August 2025. This upgrade is part of MMVTA’s ongoing commitment to providing a modern, efficient, and rider-friendly transit experience.

The new fare collection system will support Open Payment technology, allowing riders to simply tap their credit/debit card, smartphone, or smart device directly on the farebox to pay for their ride. The system will also accept cash for those who prefer traditional payment methods.

“This is a major step forward for our transit system,” said Ashley Seman, Executive Director of MMVTA. “The new fareboxes will make boarding faster and easier, and the open payment feature offers greater flexibility and convenience for our riders.”

Key features include:

  • Tap-to-Pay using credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, or Google Pay
  • Traditional Cash Fare still accepted
  • Fare Capping functionality for future use
  • Mobile Ticketing via TraXster Pay coming soon

This farebox upgrade not only enhances the passenger experience but also streamlines operations and prepares MMVTA for future innovations, including fare capping and mobile ticketing through the agency’s TraXster Pay platform.

Riders are encouraged to look for signage on board and at key stops in the coming weeks for instructions and updates on using the new system.
